20 Civil Engineering terms

My name is Tony Miguel Ngnaou Pouaha. This session is my second semester of college. I'm a currently a springboard student. For the next session, I am going to change my program to go to civil engineering. My glossary is for my readers. This glossary contains the words and terms that are used in civil engineering

abrasion
noun
The process of wearing away by friction.
Example: It was clean but showed fresh blood, and the abrasion looked painful.

abutment
noun
A structure built to support the lateral pressure of an arch or span.
Example: Stainless steel pad springs line the ABUTMENT contact area and maintain low pad slide load in a corrosive environment.

agent
noun
The person who legally represent the contractor and act for him on all occasion
Example: If you want to speak to an agent, you best leave your number.

boulder
noun
A detached and rounded or much-worn mass of rock.
Example: Within the same 'village', Site K consisted a low wall of double-skinned BOULDER construction with an earth and rubble core.

boulevard
noun
A wide street in a town or city, typically one lined with trees.
Example: Founded in 1854, it was well-built, provided with boulevards and surrounded by luxuriant gardens.

cantilever
noun
Beam supported at one end and carrying a load at the other end or distributed along the unsupported portion.
Example: A ready-made cantilever with two strain gauges attached called an Analogue Experimental Transducer provides an ideal basis for the design to be based upon.

cement
noun
The binding materials used in building and civil engineering construction.

channel
noun
A length of water wider than a strait, joining two larger areas of water, especially two seas.
Example: The channel width gradually widens towards the bridge.

contract
noun
A written or spoken agreement, especially one concerning employment, sales, or tenancy, that is intended to be enforceable by law.
Example: I have not been in the position to sign the contracts I could only observe the work done by senior colleagues within this field.

corrosion
noun
The deterioration and loss of a material and its critical properties due to chemical, electrochemical and other reactions of the exposed material surface with the surrounding environment.
Example: Another reason of choosing between different materials is their resistance to corrosion.

A temporary route for traffic around a close portion of round.
Example: After making a long detour north, often crossing the roads previously travelled by Bonvalot and Bower, and passing by Riwoche, he came to Chiamdo and Tachienlu.

The action of diluting.

ditch
noun
A narrow channel dug in the ground, typically used for drainage alongside a road or the edge of a field.
Example: a man with a bulldozer can dig a DITCH faster than one with only a shovel, but he is not more efficient; he just has more capital to work with.

easement
noun
A right to cross or otherwise use someone else's land for a specified purpose.
Example: A conservation easement is federally protected land that will not be used for land development purposes.

expressway
noun
a highway designed for fast traffic, with controlled entrance and exit, a dividing strip between the traffic in opposite directions, and typically two or more lanes in each direction.
Example: Green signs used for toll expressway or highways.

temporary framework structures used to support a building during its construction.

noun
A framework of spaced bars that are paralleled to or cross each other.
Example: Each grid boxes was weighted by surface area, using the cosine of the latitude.

groundwater
noun
Water held underground in the soil or in pores and crevices in rock.
Example: Surface water passes through unsaturated zone topsoil to the aquifer groundwater.

joist
noun
A length of timber or steel supporting part of the structure of a building, typically arranged in parallel series to support a floor or ceiling.
Example: The new timber should be taken the full length of the old joist even if there is only a slight bow in the middle.

plan
noun
A program or method prepared ahead of time, a project or definite purpose, or a design or drawing of something.
Example: We do not plan to spend all that we earn.
